Trading-

The chinook people were known to be very peaceful and had all the land they needed so they didn’t go to war often .The Chinook were best known for their trading habits they would trade with tribes thousands of miles away from their home territory. The main trading language was even named after them it was referred to as “Chinook jargon”

The main goods they traded was fish (mostly salmon), canoes ,water proof hats, wooden jewelry, clothes, wood, roots, berries, woven baskets, and they even participated in slave trade. Iwo n return of the goods the chinook would get food, handmade objects, shells and bags.

They traded along the along the south bank of the Columbia River with many different cultures and tribes like British and American traders and travelers who came to the Oregon Lewis and Clark were two of the settles who traded with the Chinook.

The trading langue they used use in trading called “Chinook jargon” is much different from Chinook langue Chinook Jargon was a combination of French, English, and some chinook was involved. Most people say that Chinook Jargon was not necessary for a trading langue since most travelers have learned the tribe langue.

Spirtual Journey :

The Chinook were very religious like most tribes but there is one ritual really interested me its call the guardian spirit journey. The Chinook believed in unseen spirits that helped people in life and in time of need.

When Chinook children reached the age of 10 they were given a stick and sent out by of one of their elders and instructed to travel to a sacred place:  make a mark on the ground and wait for a vision to appear soon after the vision would tell the person their particular characteristics that make the person special and how throws quality's would help them in life and what they would become as an adult. The spirit could also show the child a special dance or song that could be used to summon the persons special power in rare cases the spirit would tell and show the person they would become be a healer.
